Retirement visa has been introduced into the Australian immigration system to allow aged people from other countries to spend a part of their retirement years in Australia. There have been some important changes to the Retirement Visas in the past. Currently, people from other countries who wish to spend some of their retirement years in Australia can do so only as “Investor Retirees”.

Investor Retirement Visa (Subclass 405)

The Investor Retirement Visa is for people wishing to spend a part of their retirement in Australia. This is the only visa in the group of Business Visas, which does not lead to permanent residency. The applicants for this visa must:

  • be Older than 55 years of age;
  • be sponsored by an Australian state or territory (NSW and ACT offer no sponsorship);
  • be prepared to make a designated investment of either $500,000.00 or $750,000.00 depending on where they wish to live in Australia;
  • have assets of at least $500,000.00 or 750,000.00 depending on where they wish to live in Australia;
  • have an income (such as a pension) of at least $50,000.00 or $65,000.00 depending on where they wish to live in Australia.
